I was introduced to the RSPCA, as a fifth grader; at Glen Huntly Primary School. It is an organization which teaches, promotes and practices; the safe and healthy treatment; of all animals; known to, mankind.
I was awarded a silver badge, with a blue, black and red logo: that read RSPCA. It was my initiation, into this world heritage foundation – which stands for: our pets’ protection. First we were taught about: how important our four legged friends were to; us, as individuals, to our family and friends; and, to society as a whole. Dogs were fun to have around the house – to play with in the park; to take for a walk, to exercise; and, as a watch dog to protect us from burglars and dangerous people.
But dogs were also important workers. They were employed on a sheep farm; to help drovers, (shepherds/herders); and, they guarded the farm animals from predators; like wolves and foxes. Dogs also helped the vision impaired, and blind; and were an important contact with the outside world, for these disabled people. Also, these animals - which were of a larger size - such as the Saint Bernard, would help find missing people buried in snow; near the peak of a rugged mountain; or they protected their master, from vicious, giant beasts, (such as Grizzly Bears), in remote areas where: it was difficult; to call for help.
Dogs also worked in the Justice System: as sniffer dogs, who discovered; whether illegal drugs, were being imported into our country, through: airports, ports and state borders. The police made use of dogs; to catch fugitives; and, to protect and assist officers, when they confronted, dangerous and violent criminals.
The teachers at school, reinforced the significance of canines to me; and, I therefore asked my parents if I could also have a dog, of my own; they obliged. My first pet dog was a: black and brown dachshund; also known as a sausage dog, which I named Sussie. She was playful, tame, alert and friendly. As she lacked proper training, she was not road wise. One Monday morning, she escaped from home and wondered off while - me and my family were, sleeping. I never saw her again.
Then my parents bought me a black Doberman, which was very well trained; and, I named him, Bruno. He was a good watch dog, and was: intelligent, courageous, amiable with the whole family; and, those in the neighborhood. Once we soon, had a second dog, we were advised to kindly give away Bruno; to a caring family, that was leaving indefinitely, for England. My parents had, purchased for me, a German Shepherd puppy. I named him Rex, (Latin for King), and he spent many years at my house. He loved the whole family - as we likewise felt, a lot of: care, affection and love for him. He used to make me giggle when he would; dig up the best part of the back yard to, bury his favourite bone; from the, butcher. I purchased for, Rex, a gigantic dog house; and, an expensive choker and lead. The whole family took him for walks: many times, every day. I loved to take Rex to the Vet, for an examination and vaccination. We had a big race course for horses, near our house. I would enjoy walking Rex there; and, my four legged friend would, be thrilled by; going for a run up and down the track; as if the whole area; was his own.
I still have many photos of Rex in my album. They are in colour, which makes the memory of Rex: special, unique, sentimental, honourable and rewarding. I am glad that the RSPCA, encouraged me to; appreciate: the rewarding, healthy, emotional support - as well as - love, care attention, pleasure and wonderful memories which animals; family pets and especially, dogs can bring to a young boy’s life!
